Using moss
Good afternoon,
So the more I read, the more afraid I am to use moss at all. When do you use moss and when you use it, do you use it around the roots or far from the roots? Sorry for the people who have read my growing conditions many times over all week.. Lol. I am in south Florida. My orchids are in trees with filtered light as well as on a stand that gets morning sun. I notice the moss stays wet, even down here for a long time. My schedule allows me to water once a day.
I have phals, dendros, catts, and one epidendrum.
Thanks again,
Jen

Since I grow outdoors as much as I can, I use moss only on those orchids that tolerate a lot of water at the roots. If you are growing orchids that are mounted and using a pad of moss around the roots, that is usually OK too.
I avoid growing Phalaenopsis, Cattleyas etc.in moss because it holds too much water and water is too difficult to manage outdoors.

Well, from what i understand, florida's humidity is relatively higg, so usimg moss will take a while to dry up. If you do have stress plants, this is what i do might or might not work for you. I put about 1/2 to an inche ontop to keep the humidity up. Of course, my condition is different from you, i live in socal, humidity here is low, so my top inche of moss will dry up by sunset. Hope that helps, if you do have stress plants, i recommend you youtube pictureMaria video, she lives in Florida, she has some rescue video for stress plants. Hope that helps
