Effect of temperature on flower colour Female
Default Effect of temperature on flower colour

Hi all,

I have a recently purchased tolumnia which sent out a few buds from the side of the flower spike after I bought it.

The flowers at the top are the original colour, and the ones at the bottom are the ones that developed in my apartment.

I'm thinking the place it grew up in was warmer than my apartment? Or is it the other way around? I remember it has something to do with red pigment.

Any insight, comments, stories, haiku, whatever, appreciated.

Reds generally develop better in cooler, brighter conditions. Does it apply to tolumnia? You got me, but probably.

It could be temperatures but it could be just that the blooms are new. I have several Tolumnia that change appearance as the bloom ages, mostly on the wide lip. They either gain spots or go from white to pink etc.

I had a nice blue Den nobile, and I saw an attractive version of it that was red, So, I bought that too.

This year the blasted blue one came out red, so I have two reds.....

Ok that's actually good to know about tolumnias! It was so different I thought there must be an external factor. I'm actually glad it might lighten up, because I like the old colour more.

Also - cooler and brighter definitely does not apply to my apartment. So it's probably the age of the bloom.

Thanks!

A: The cooler the temperature, the more intense the red color comes out (at last in Paphs).
B: Many orchids open one color, and then eithed fade or intensify the color as they mature.

I have several tolumnias and depending when they bloom in my winter cool greenhouse or in spring when it is warm, you would think they are two totally different plants. At first I thought I had my tags mixed up, but I didn't. The ones I have in bloom right now. also had spikes in late winter when it was a lot cooler. They were mostly pink blooms and these blooms are pink with a lot of yellow. It's kind of fun to get different colours. So for Tolumnias, I would definitely say the temperature affects their colour in a big way.

For my Cattleyas, it seems the opposite. Any of mine that are pink or purple and bloom in the winter greenhouse, are a lot paler than the same plant that someone is growing in their home or warmer climate. Even when it is a piece of mine that I have given to someone else. Theirs are a deeper colour than mine by quite a large margin.
