What's happened to my Epidendrum?!?
We have a huge Epidendrum, currently flowering with 3 spikes. The plant was in almost perfect condition. A couple of days ago my wife was watering the plants when she noticed this:
Our first thought was sunburn, but we've actuality had it inside since it started flowering, in order to enjoy the flowers a bit more, and it's not been exposed to any direct sun at all (unlike when it was outside, where it got an hour or so of direct late afternoon sun every day).
What I can see of the roots look fine, though I've not taken it out of its pot to check fully:
One the new growths has a black tip, too:
What could have done this? The only changes its had to its care is lower light level...

Is an air conditioner or heated air blowing directly on the plant in your house?

Nope, since it's been inside its been near an open window where it receives just a little less fresh air than it did when it was outside (on the other side of the same window). Daytime temperature around 25°C, nighttime around 16°C.

I can't tell whether it's mechanical damage or an infection. If it's mechanical damage it shouldn't spread, unless whatever caused it is still happening, and the spots should dry up and turn papery brown.
If it's an infection the spots will continue to enlarge. If this is going to happen you probably already noticed it.
If it's not spreading, I would let the spots dry completely, then cut off the affected parts.
If it's still spreading, I would perform radical surgery right away. It's an Epidendrum. They tend to be vigorous growers, so if you get all the infection, it will recover quickly. I would cut off every affected stem way down near the roots. Throw them away in the trash, not the compost heap. Sterilize your blade with 10% bleach for 10 minutes or heating well above 212 F / 100C between cuts.
I would also take off one or more healthy keikiis and root them up separately, in case you can't stop the spread and the big plant dies.

Thanks for the advice, estación seca - it doesn't appear to be spreading, so it would seem to be mechanical damage. I'm just really confused as to how.
Here's hoping I figure it out sooner rather than later, before it happens to another plant.

Another thought - do you ever have spider mite problems? That could be left-over spider mite damage. They like epis.

Nope, never. And it just happened the past week. It would have to be a SERIOUS infestation to do that much damage that quickly!

It looks like wilt (fusarium wilt?) to me but I've never known it to affect Epi's.

Do you supplement with calcium? I have only had the tips of new growth rot but I have had it happen to 3 of my Catt's. I started to supplement with gypsum mixed with Epsom salts and it stopped. One of my new ones rotted both new growths before I figured it out. The next two have been fine.
