This flower is termed peloric where all the petals on all the flowers mimic the lip each time it blooms. It is generally termed "stable" because of those traits. The one flower which started this thread is a transient mutation and may or may not occur on future flowers on a future blooming.
Mutations generally occur because of over mericloning of the plants, and often because the tissue is not from the original mother plant, but from another clone.
As a note, I think it is safe to say that all phal. hybrids sold in the market place today are man made. Few if any collected plants reach the mass market. A few collected species are available but with the Cites requirements, we seldom see them anywhere except in the countries where they are collected.
