Unusual Spike Growth on Phalaenopsis?

I bought a NOID phalaenopsis a ways back on impulse because it was cheap due to being out of bloom and the roots looked good. I trimmed the tip of the spike to encourage a rebloom since I didn't want to wait for a second spike to see what colors the blooms would be. When a second shoot began starting, I peeled back the scale it was under (someone told me that was a good idea, but I'm not so sure now), and managed to damage the shoot a little bit. Now, rather growing straight out, there are a couple of branches off the new shoot and it looks a little odd to me. However, I'm not very experienced with orchids. Does anyone know if this type of growth pattern is normal or due to being damaged?

Sometimes flower spikes just pop off the side of a phal with a few buds. Not that unusual in my opinion.

From what I see in your photo, the inflorescence is branching, a common occurrence, although not all will do so.
I doesn't look to be a normal branching though.
Time will tell.
Branching will happen almost assuredly on one that the spike doesn't die when the open flowers fade.
If you have a Phal. that the spike stays alive after the flowers fade, it can continue to put out more flowers with time.
It will lose the neat orderly look of a single new spike.
But, it can lead to multiple spikes and more flowers open.

Thanks for the input, guys. Since the branching (whether unusual or not) isn't something that needs to be corrected, it will be fun to sit back and see how it develops. I'm starting to see more developed buds now, so hopefully I'll see blooms within a month or so...
