Default From what was said in the IOSPE

the Maxillaria and the Masdevalia will need a fair amount of humidity and watering. A terrarium might be right, or possibly just use a fish tank.

I concur with Grandma. Placing the mount in a pot might be a good way to increase the humidity (like the tray with pebbles). I'd try to keep the mounts as mounts, as I agree that they are more natural looking. To get my mounts established, or to keep them happy inside during the winter, I'll place a mount on top of some rocks in a shallow saucer or tray. It's like a private humidity tray and doesn't really take up much more space than a potted plant.

Default Either way would work.

The point I was trying to make was that the first two like humidity.

Thumbs up we're giving it a try...

I have seen pictures of mounting done that way and it fascinated me. I think it might be better for increasing the humidity that way. Keep us posted if you try that.
Yes, I'm giving it a go! Have put the Masdie's mount so that it's sticking out of a small pot with a layer of river rock and sphag just underneath the roots. Already she seems happier - her lil nest of roots has kept nice and green much longer, and the cooler temp right around her from the terra cotta evaporating will probably do her well.

Am going to give it a bit before deciding if I should do the same with the Max. So far it has seemed just fine.
