Should I buy this Vanda?
Hello,
I need your help again. Today, I saw this Vanda in a flower shop. I want to buy it but several things concern me.
1 - A lot of its leaves were rotten in the base and fell off. Some of the ones which are left are in a similar shape. I don't think it's a disease. It was in a vase and they had sprayed it from above. I think some water was left between the leaves and the stem and that's the cause of the problem.
2 - A lot of roots are dead but there are new ones so I think that's not such a problem.
What do you think?

The leaves were damaged by something, perhaps too much sun. The new growth looks good, and most of the roots look good. I wouldn't pay full price, because it is quite damaged, but it should recover.

I agree with Bil, however, if you can get a discount on the plant, then go for it. Why not?

Thank you for the replies! The price is very good. Vandas in flower shops are usually sold for around $70, while this is $15. They're not that cheap even on the market.
What concerns me is that the spike was cut. I don't think they wash the scissors very often. The other plants look healthy, but I can't be sure they're not sick.

Looking at the pics, that plant has had what an old friend once called a 'Hard old paper round.'
It's hard to judge from a pic, but it looks less as tho it hasn't had the right conditions, and more like it has been abused.
As always, the choice is yours. If you have 15 bucks to spare and feel like a gamble, go for it, but it might be a couple of years before it flowers. I agree, the flower spike looks as if it was taken off by a butcher. I think that reflects a lack of care in it's general health.
If you do pull it round, it will be a real ego boost, but if you lose it, don't beat yourself up.

Hello again,
Update: I bought the orchid today. I removed the dead roots and discovered there are a lot of healthy ones. It also has a small new growth which I hope will become a new plant in the future.

It looks like it will be fine based on what I'm seeing. The leaf damage is mechanical and not caused by disease.

For $15 I think you did ok. It should come around fine with some good care.
