Cymbidiums absolutely thrive for me in S/H culture.
Many moons ago, I imported about 500 "Chinese cymbidiums" a month. They came to me from Taiwan, bare root, two mature growths and one new one - often in spike - and I potted them up that way right away. Never even lost a bud.
When you water it, do so from the top, and absolutely flood the pot, allowing it to drain down to the holes.
The roots looked OK from this angle. I put smallish seedlings (no pseudobulbs yet) of a Cym hybrid and a Cymbidium dayanum album into S/H a couple of months ago, and they're both pushing new growth.

I have several Cymbidium in s/h leca culture. Although it's only been a few months, so far so good. There are new growths, root growth, and one even flowered.
