Sharry Baby transparent leaves with "the spots"
HI Everyone,
I know Sharry Baby is notorious for getting the spotting but my massive sharry baby was crammed into a pot that was at least a size too small making it near impossible to water. It sprouted 5-6 new fans before I got around to repotting it one of the fans clearly had been watered directly on it and the new leaves were not only heavily spotted but transparent and slippery so I cut the entire growth off and sterilized it while repotting. All of the roots seemed to be in great condition despite the spagnum moss being completely deteriorated and yucky. I used repot me's imperial oncidium mix and obviously a bigger pot. Was this the right move? should I have left it alone? I didn't take pictures sorry.

I've had that happen - when water gets into the small new growths and rots them - I just always pulled out the rotted stuff, and never had any issues. So, if that was the cause of your rot, I would expect it to be fine, and I imagine the plant will be happy to be out of the old, deteriorated sphag.

OK thank you at the time it seemed like a no brainer but then I second guessed myself. I bought it in bloom and in far too small of a pot I am kind of surprised they let it get that crammed before selling it. Oh well fingers crossed it keeps growing leaps an bounds!

I find that I need to repot practically everything I get. Even if the plant doesn't need repotting from a size point of view, often it is a medium that doesn't fit with my watering. And a healthy plant that is outgrowing its container is often the one that blooms the best, so that is when it gets sold. Orchids often need a little bit of stress to trigger blooming, and that tight pot is just the ticket. One of the quicker ways to kill an orchid is to over-pot, so no more extra room than just enough for 2-3 years' growth.
