Phalaenopsis tetraspis "C1" vs Phalaenopsis tetraspis x tetraspis "C1"
Okay orchid experts, dumb this down for me. What would be the difference between these two plants? Would one have a more stable colour patterning?
I'm trying to decide which to buy. I suppose I could buy both, but am just not sure whether that's basically like buying the same plant. (Look at me trying to manage my addiction all reasonable-like. )
Phal tetraspis "C1" should have the random large spots. The cross with the unspecified tetraspis might, but far from a sure thing unless the breeding history indicates otherwise.
If there is no cheating involved then tetraspis "C1" should be a clone (vegetatively grown, e.g., from meristem) whereas the other would be a seed grown plant. Each seed grown plant posesses individual properties - maybe better than the parents or maybe worse is some/all areas - same as human offsprings, so it's up to you to reveal it's potential. The clone on the other hand would have more predictable behaviour, but would not necessarily be superior to a seed grown plant.
The cross is probably an attempt to improve the quality or at least broaden the genetic base of plants that show the C1 type spotting, but it is probably the first step in a 2 or 3 generation project. There is no guarantee, and possibly very little chance, of seeing the desired pattern in this generation.
The C1 designation is seen in so many variations - "C1" 'C1' C1 "C#1" 'C#1' C#1 and more - that I have never been sure if it is meant to designate a clone or a seed grown strain that conforms to type, or that the sellers involved even know the difference. In any case though, it should indicate a plant that will show the desired pattern.
Tetraspis has 'bar' patterning while C1 has the random petal colour. A cross between the 2 is potentially interesting and a worthwhile experiment, but probably only for a very small seedling population.

Meant to add you should ask to see a photo of the parents as there are also all white tetraspis.......as a breeder myself I would take the cross out of curiosity.
