Very wise. I had to replace an irrigation system for the garden and orchard as it just seized up with calcite.

ROs aren't that dear.. I have a storage barrel in the greenhouse so that the water is always at the ambient temp.

More likely the salt content was approaching sea water! I was topping off with tap water for 3 years with no exchange and 2% daily losses in summer. You didn't think of it because ponds there don't evaporate so fast.

True enough. Around here most ponds tend to overflow from rainwater several times a season, so although the minerals do accumulate to levels above our tap water, they get a periodic flushing whether the owner does it or not.
