Default Repotting a cymbidium

Just posted my new member intro in that section. Here, I want to ask a question about repotting a cymbidium Sweet Heart "Spring Pearl".

Currently, it's in bloom, so I am sure I should wait.

The pot I want to use is a very pretty Chinese clay 8.5" tall pot that I suspect was made specifically for cymbidiums; maybe for cascading bonsai Have had this pot for years. It's three legged, with plenty of drainage holes on sides and bottom. It is not glazed inside or out, but is very hard, fired clay with incised decorations. Really lovely thing.

Should I repot the plant in a plastic pot and insert that into the decorative one or is it permissible to plant directly into the decorative one, giving the roots somewhere to go? Or should I forget the whole thing and leave it alone, since it's happy at the moment.

I realize this may change the watering habits. Will I have to worry about the plant getting top heavy? Don't want to destroy my lovely pot!!!

I do not know where in the US you are located but in any case, you should wait until the weather warms up. Most people wait until the plant is through blooming and there are signs of new growth. If you will send a PM to goldcoastcymgrowers@gmail.com they will be glad to send you a free repotting guide. Many members of this Forum have sent for it and found it very helpful. You might also visit the Cymbidium section of the OB where you can find lots of info specific to Cyms.

Welcome to the OB and the wonderful world of Cymbidiums!
