Two of my Phalaenopsis have splits at the edge of one leaf. They are both top leaves. The edges of the split are a light offwhite color, and the leaves have a few small spots the same color. What could have caused this, and is it dangerous to the plant? I was thinking perhaps it's excessive handling. There are no signs of burning.
I tried searching this topic and only found discussion of splits in the middle of the leaf which are not discolored. Would someone care to provide an answer about what I described? Thanks in advance.
It sounds like mechanical damage, where the leaves have split and then the damaged areas have calloused. The spots are likely to be the same. It's nothing to be alarmed at, if the areas of white start to spread then there may be something else causing damage. If you are still concerned, post a pic as that always helps.
Thanks, I'll post pics if there's any more cause for concern. So is mechanical damage caused by buffeting leaves? My mother exhorts me not to handle the orchids much, so I'm trying to only when necessary!
It happens to some of mine- not sure what causes it, but they seem to keep on growing.
But I dont think its something I've caused- have had some that just starts out that way. Almost like they grow in different direction- half the leaf kinda twist a tiny bit- causing to leave a little split.
Post pics if you are unsure- easier to tell if its something wrong or just a small damage/defect
