There is a black colouring at the base of the orchid. I saw this when I first bought it. Is it normal for orchid to have this blackish colour on certain parts of the plant? One of the air roots also is a bit blackish at the start of it.
Doesn't smell bad or feel mushy. I don't suspect it's rot right?

Just keep an eye on it- seems to be from an old leaf. Usually it just dries out, same with roots- they can get some color from age/medium.
But it can also be some fungus or rot or something- keep that part dry and see if it gets worse.
Its something I would say is "maybe", doesnt look perfectly happy, but that doesnt mean its not gonna be okay.
(I have pics of mine in the repotting place- last page, those are really healthy)
All I give them is water, I actually am lazy with nutrition aswell. No chemicals, only water.
I think you might have been "to kind" to them, over-caring. How could that be a bad thing😜? Well, I have learnt that its better to keep it simple. Water, light, and they kinda just do their thing- growing and being happy.
Of course, if I get a problem, I would treat them with chemicals, but mostly they dont need all that stuff.
Hope your plant will keep on growing nicely ☺️

It's frustrating to know when i came back from work today, the phal seemes to have deteriorated. I have done almost everything right from repotting to watering yet I see blackish stuff at the base.
1) Could it possibly already have been in decline when I got it from IKEA?
2) Even the topmost leaf (young one) feels soft and looks dull.
3) What's left for me to do now? Any help?
4) The rest of the leaves are turning yellow and the blackish area at the base (near where the root joins to the base) seems a bit wet.
This was meant to be my 2nd attempt and experiement on Phals but seems it isn't going too well. (Refer to pics)

I think this plant is pretty much dead or soon will be. It looks like a fungal infection at it's base. This would certainly contribute to it's mortality, although I think the chemical onslaught of this plant did not help either. I would chalk this up as an important experience, we have all killed orchids!
I would get another, inspect it in store for any signs of rot, if it's tightly packed in sphagnum, repot it in charcoal. Keep it out of direct sunlight, don't spray it with chemicals unless it is showing signs of infection, and hopefully it will survive.

Get a Phalaenopsis from an orchid nursery that cares about their plants, not from a mass market vendor.
