I keep searching on line for steel pot hangers but can find nothing in OZ.

Can find a simple 4" or 100mm pot holder that would very much suit my needs at an orchid nursery but $3 each x 100 makes them very unattractive.

I can twist wire and make a light weight weight pot holder but my eyes are very slow to adjust from light to dark and dark to light which makes welding impossible.

I am going to try making pot holders by twisting soft fencing wire and see what happens. The trouble with this approach is it is very hard on ones hands.

Use high tensile strength ultraviolet resistant fishing line. Or ultraviolet resistant maritime rope.

If stoned hippies in Laguna Beach, California, could make elaborate macramé pot holders and sell them at the Sawdust Festival in the 1970s, you can do it.

Tell you what is useful, and that is braided fishing line. I was looking for some strong thread, but by the time it is strong enough, it is too thick. Braided line on the other hand is so fine you can sew with it, yet it will take 6 kilos of weight! I use it for replacing a button my jeans.

You have to use a knife to cut it, and dont try and snap it, you will cut your fingers to the bone.

What I did before I could weld was to bend wire in a circle with three compressed loops standing up. You then melt three holes in the plastic edge of the pot and push them thru. You then bend them over to make the three hooks.

Alternatively, there are welding masks that have clear glass, which are wonderful.

Thank you. Welding is really pretty easy, especially if you can invest in a MiG welder, as they are so much better than arc welders. My friend lent me his, gave me a five minute lesson and I was away. Best also to invest in a large CO2 cylinder as it works out way cheaper than
the tiny canisters they sell.

I'm not a great welder, but with a bit of grinding and a dab of black paint you can hide a world of errors!

It's pretty easy to become a second rate welder. A grinder will help with the mistakes, and a pot of paint hides just how bad the welds really were. Mind you, nothing I have made, including a pergola, a car port and a greenhouse, plus lots of small stuff like plant stands and tomato supports has fallen apart.

If a weld does fail, it's so easy to fix it.
