Lowe's orchid haul
Hi all--
Found more than the usual phals at the Lowe's in Heath, Ohio today...Here's what followed me home:
3 no-ID mini phals (lots of equestris in all of them)
three "bag babies:"
Max. tenuifolia
Enc. alata majus
Den. aggregatum
and, from the clearance rack, 3 no-ID out of bloom phals for $1 each--all pretty dry, but healthy roots and leaves otherwise.
Oh, and I also picked up the boxes of roofing nails I originally stopped by for....

It's pretty hit or miss, though this particular store usually has more than phals--but the bag babies are generally heavy on catt hybrids, so I agree that finding the Enc alata and Den aggregatum was pretty lucky!
Good news is that most of the plants (barring the no-ID clearance phals) were in good shape (and even the phals are bouncing back after a good soaking), though on the dry side. Though I think I'd rather have dry (nothing that a good drink of water when they get home can't fix) than soggy and root rotted.

Wow you are lucky that you have those bag babies. I haven't seen those here for 3 years.

Definitely made my day! I hadn't seen Den. aggregatum as a bag baby before, so I snapped it up. Then made the mistake of looking through the rest of the bags and found the others.
I am fortunate to have two reliable orchid sources even though I live in the boonies--there's a good local greenhouse (Wilson's) outside of Newark that carries phals, catt hybrids, onc complex hybrids, den phals, and even some paphs, in addition to this Lowe's in Heath.
Wilson's also carries a pretty good selection of houseplants (leaning toward the uncommon), citrus, bonsai stock, and so on. In the summer they're even more dangerous since their perennial plant selection is just as eclectic.
Needless to say, I don't dare visit either place very often. As happened this time, I go in for something small and inexpensive (like the roofing nails) and come out with way more stuff....

I bought a lot of bag babies from Lowes when my orchid addiction started. I was in my local Lowes a few weeks ago for painting supplies and went to the plant section to see what they had, and found nothing. Looks like they stopped carrying the bag babies also. Guess they weren't selling well enough.
