Top leaves turn yellow dendrobrium Male
Default Top leaves turn yellow dendrobrium

Hi everyone,

Happy holidays firstly. Hope everyone is having a great time !

Would like to ask..about my dendrobrium. Recently one of the top smallest leaf started to turn yellow. Eventually shrivelling up and I had to cut it. Now a second leaf (just below it) bigger one, is starting to yellow up as well.

I place it in my home next to a window. It can get quite hot and humid during the day and I read sometimes too much heat may make the leaves dry up.

I'm trying to attach a pic which shows the first leaf which has since dried up.

I'm also thinking of shifting the pot in to another locatio. (Less sunlight) but more airy and cool. Any thoughts?

I have only fed it very very mild fertilizer with water once in all the waterings so far. Normal waterings are every 5 -7 days schedule.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Hmm. I have seen reference to salt buildups causing yellow tips, but that reference wasn't to dens..

I had a pest problem where cushion scale had got into a den phal, they had started to build up at the base of the top leaf which then turned yellow and soft in its entirety.

Hopefully someone else will have other suggestions.

Hard cane Dens or Phal-Dens will some times loose leaves on the older canes, the one that have already flower, and its part of the normal process, that maybe happening here. With that said, I would look carefully at the plant to make sure that there are no spider mites as well.

How dry does the potting media become in between waterings?

Hi Sonya,

Almost bone dry. Though some of the whitish roots still have traces of green on them. Except the ones that are sticking out of the pot. Those remain pretty white with a brownish core (if I really look in the centre) .

Yes, this dend, has recently flowered and the spike has dried up. I have cut it back since.

Don't worry about your plant loosing some leaves, some dendrobiums do this very easily. They are touchy when they are watered, too much or if the plant/water was too cold sometimes can be reasons for yellow leaves. As long as your roots are still ok the plant should bounce back.
