A mushy brown pseudobulb is not contributing anything to a plant other than a reservoir of bacteria or fungi. Your plant that may be slowly dying after cutting a rotting pseudobulb off would be quickly dying if you hadn't.

I've been growing Cattleya alliance plants for more than 30 years; trust me, cutting the browning pseudobulb off is the only option. Next E. cordigera, move it out of the soil (or peat moss, etc.) into a rapidly draining / drying medium as soon as possible.
