Should I repot immediately or wait?
Hi there, I just got a crush on orchids, and I can not stop myself buying new beauties. This one is the newest member of our family with gorgeous blossoms. I know very well that it is always better to check the root conditions of the newly bought phals immediately. Almost all the phals that I bought suffer from medium to severe root rot due to being tucked in tightly in spagh moss. However, this looks quite healthy to me at first glance, and also seems to be potted with bark mostly, but the root system seems so crowded. Should I repot it and also investigate the roots despite the risk of loosing the blossoms? I am a newbie, so if you have any suggestions I appreciate very much. Thank you in advance. 🙂

From what I can see there's plenty of healthy roots to help the plant transition successfully to your media. If the roots that can't be seen are in good condition the plant might not miss a beat and could just keep on growing and flowering. I would look at the long term and repot, but I'm not that far removed from the excited newbie stage that I can't understand worrying about a specific blooming cycle.

The plus side of repotting now is that if the growing medium (bark or moss -from the photo yours looks like it is in bark) is starting to break don, or has bugs or snails lurking in it, you can get rid of some of these problems with repotting.
The down side - well, for a hybrid Phalaenopsis, there really is no down side to repotting immediately. The flowers won't miss a beat.

I would wait a bit until I'm sure that the plant is in active growth as it seems that the plant is very healthy. I would only risk repotting in the wrong moment if the plant life was at risk due to bad medium. (Does not seem to be the case) - otherwise, just observe how the plant goes and act in case of danger. Be careful with watering, as you're not sure about the medium. Use the skewer method to play on the safe side! Happy growing! :-)

Thank you all for quick reponses. I really do not see any other creatures feasting on my precious, fortunately. So as all you suggest, it seems to be better wait a little and monitor the plant. I hope I can provide her the best environment she deserves. Again, thank you a lot!

If you haven't already visited the sticky at the top of this Beginner Forum called "The Phal Abuse Stops Here", do so. It will answer many questions you have and some you may not have now but will later.
