I like how Vandas look, but we vacation often enough that I do not think I could care for one with exposed roots properly. When I spotted some potted ones at my favorite nursery, I bought one. It is potted in large bark chips in a bowl shaped terracotta pot with several nickel-sized holes in it through which several roots are emerging. There are also several roots coming out of the top. I bought it in spike, and one of the buds has opened. Most of the aerial roots are showing growing tips.
The tag had the unhelpful note of "Orchideen Vanda Hybride" on it. I could not find an English speaking nursery attendant (Germany) and everyone was super busy due to their Advent sale.
Attached (I hope) is a picture of what I have.
Two questions:
First, how often and what is the best way to water this thing? I can submerge it fairly easily (the bottom saucer is not attached, I was just trying to avoid setting the pot ON the roots) using a mixing bowl, but I am not sure how often I should be doing so. I know Vandas with free roots need to be watered quite often, but I was hoping this one might be able to go a bit longer. Suggestions?
Second, is there a list someplace of various lux ranges different orchids prefer? I have a light meter now, but I am at a bit of a loss on what to do with it.
