Too cold for Phals?(SF)
I picked up a couple bloomed out Phals from HD for $2 a piece for some more semihydro experiments.
However, I will be moving into the bay area within a couple miles from the coast. Cool/foggy. Room temperatures even in summer are in the low 70's at best, and I had to bundle up at night. Will these phals survive? Or better to leave with folks in Fresno, CA(they will see hold temperatures in winter but the rest of the year things can be toasty)
Also, if anyone could recommend some bold hardy ones that prefer intermediate conditions(even cool growers will likely work) I am all ears. I suspect Masdevallia might love our windows.

You will be able to grow cool orchids most of us only dream of, so don't spend your time and growing real estate on NOID Phals.

I agree with estacion seca. Why not try Cymbidiums, Odontoglossums, Coelogynes, Masdevallias that might prefer the cooler conditions?

Are you planning on growing outdoors or NOT heating your living space?
Grow cool growers outside and your Phals indoors.

You will need to put a seedling heat mat underneath the pots if you want to grow Phals in S/H in SF over the winter indoors. The temp could get down into the 30s.

The housing I will be in is quite old...and not much insulation. I will heat my room a little bit but even in summer I bundled up.
estacion: Would any of those be picked up inexpensively locally?
Wolfchan: I see you are in Silicon Valley. Probably quite a bit warmer than where I am at.

A south window and a curtain make miracles.
