I'm interested in starting some orchid seeds and was wondering what the preferred medium for germination is. Any input will be helpful as I am currently shopping for seeds.

How much of a newbie are you? Flasking orchid seeds is not an easy task. You should go to the Propagation section and read the sticky's on there. I think there is very good information about it.
And be very careful about buying orchid seeds on line as I know there have been some post about how they sell you all kinds of seeds other than orchid ones.
If it were me before I tried to start my own seeds I would try and de-flask some first.
Any who, good luck and oh ya welcome to the forum.
Perhaps the mods can move this to that section and you will get more help. I have zero experience in this project so I will leave it to those that do. I am however interested in it so I do read the posts on it.
I think they call it agar (sp) not a medium and some where on there they give a place to go and give different things you can use. Some use bananas and other things.
I think they can get contaminated fairly easy and then I think the whole batch is a goner.
Yeah agar is the jelling additive as well as other sugars and starches are added then autoclaved or pressure cooked for 15min. At 15psi. I plan to use a still air box (large clear tote with 5" arm holes cut in the side) for cleaning and flasking the seeds.
I'm into fungi as well and have grown out cultures on Petri dishes, made clean transfers in order to isolate the most vigorous growing mycelium.
