Phalaenopsis spent spike cutting - to cinnamon or not to cinnamon?
So I've decided to cut down the spent (but still green) spikes on my mini Phal as I understand that this may encourage a better bloom next season. I'm aware that I need to use a sterilised blade for this, but what about once the cut has been made? Is it recommendable to apply a little cinnamon powder to the cut to prevent infection? Or is this unnecessary? Or could it damage the plant? I know this was advisable when I removed a sick leaf from one of my Cattleyas, but does it apply to Phals, too?

I'm not sure it's necessary. I don't think it would hurt. If there is no rot now, you could probably bite off the stalk and leave it alone and it would heal fine. But, why not? After all, how often do you completely use up powdered cinnamon before it starts losing its aroma?

I almost never apply cinnamon unless I know, or strongly suspect, that there is some fungal or bacterial process going on that I want to stop. But, there is probably no harm in using cinnamon on cut tissue, just in case, as long as you keep the cinnamon off of the roots.
