Can I use Oak tree branch for mounting?
Default Can I use Oak tree branch for mounting?

Hello everyone.

Occasional browser and first time poster

I found a piece of cut oak branch and decided to use it for mounting. I have removed barks and slightly sand papered it. It is fresh cut and still wet.

I apologize for my English as it is my 2nd language.

Oak is fine but do not remove the bark. The rough bark helps the roots to stick to the mount. The bark also retain moisture when you water the plant.

I would suggest that you let it dry thoroughly before attempting to use it for mounting a plant.

Even without the bark, plants will likely take well to it.

Kon, Welcome to the Orchid Board! It will be great to see your plants growing on the mounts you made.

Welcome! Several yrs ago I experimented with oak bark for a mount and due to the resin it secreted I lost the plant...still kicking myself! So I think what you've shown, barkless, will work nicely, even though roots attach better to a rougher surface. With that said, good luck and keep posting!

everyone.

Some time ago I mounted four miniature plants on a piece of oak branch. Good news is they are still well, I think. Tree phals are growing new roots - some roots are in the air and some are under moss layer. Oldest phal has two flower spikes even though it's losing older leaf. Youngest phal seems to be producing a single flower spike. The aerangis fastuosa does not seem well. it is starting to lose older leaf and hast made and new roots.
It doesn't look very nice right now with my messy wiring and lot of moss layers. Should I reduce mosses in the future once they grow more roots?
