New roots coming in between existing leaves
I am hoping this is the right board to post to. I have an orchid that sits on my desk. I'm sorry, I am not sure what type it is. It's been getting a lot of new growth including new leaves. I think it's on it's 4th new leaf.
I started seeing some new roots sprouting as well. Some of them are coming in between some of the existing leaves. (see attached images) Should I be concerned about them if they are not growing down into the soil? Should I do anything to it? The orchid appears to be very healthy in general and the bottom leaves are still a nice thick green. Should I repot?

That's perfectly normal for a phal to grow roots like these. That's a good sign. Don't do nothing...or better, keep doing what you've done until now. It seems to be a good job.

This is a Phaleanopisis and the root growth you are seeing is normal. These are aerial roots. Just let them do there thing and do not try to force them into the potting media. They would like to misted every once in a while though.

Lookin' good! Depending where she sits in your home, this time of year can be drying to plants once heat is started in the house,if this applies to you. Placing her on a saucer filled with pebbles and keeping water in it but not letting her feet get wet keeps moisture in the air and spraying won't turn into a chore. Post flower pix too!

BTW, avoid water deposits in the crown and leaves base. It may lead to rot.

Good to know. Thanks. When I water it, I always make sure there is no excess water. I learned the hard way with a different orchid, hence my making sure that I am doing things right with this one.

Your Phalaenopsis looks great! The new roots are normal. You have done well not overwatering with it being in moss. Keep doing what your doing but when you get a chance, I would repot in new fresh medium. That moss looks pretty old and it also looks like there are a couple dead roots in the moss. A lot of people don't like moss because it can hold a lot of water and they have a hard time judging when to water again. They end up overwatering the plant and killing the roots. You seem to be watering just fine with the moss though. I actually love sphagnum moss but I don't pack it as tightly as most store bought Phalaenopsis orchids are. If you like the moss, stay with it. New Zealand sphagnum is the best. I also like clear plastic pots with holes or slats in the sides. They allow air to the roots and you can see how the roots are doing. When I use the moss, I usually put a few styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of the pot for drainage. You can also use bark or another meadium if you don't want to use moss. I have a few Phals that I received as gifts that are in that tightly packed moss and need to be repotted as well. I just haven't gotten around to it. Good luck and if you have anymore questions just ask and someone will answer!
