You could cut off that old black piece below the roots and treat the cut end with some Physan or alcohol. It may be near time to pot this up. I would recommend a clear pot with lots of holes and a mix of sphagnum and medium bark chunks. Remember Phals need to have almost dry media before watering again. It has come a long way and I think it will be fine. Do not over pot it as the media will stay wet for too long.
I will definitely keep an eye on it. I just placed a mix of wood chips, charcoal, and perlite in water and will leave it there for a week so it can absorb water while I keep an eye on the orchid.

Since this is my first orchid that I have saved from dying, every brown part I see scares me and makes me want to remove it before it spreads.

I have been meaning to cut the bottom part but out of fear that it will somehow negatively impact the health of the orchid, it has deterred me away from cutting it.

So it's ok that the roots are loose? It just worries me that they were firm all the way to the orchid's base and they just recently became loose. My first thought is they are rotting since softness is never a good sign.

Thank you, I feel luck has been a great part of saving this orchid.

I will definitely be potting her this week if everything goes ok. I'm going to have her under observation while the potting mix absorbs water.

Soaking the bark overnight is probably enough. A week, might make it water logged. Hopefully it is fairly chunky. When you say wood chips, I'm not sure what size you have.

Leave the black lower part on and it likely won't cause any harm since you don't want to upset it in any way. I'm not sure how the roots would be loose, but they look fine so they should be OK.

Oh sorry, I forgot to mention the size. They are around an inch.

So long as the pot has some good holes which I can't see in the picture, it should be good. Your roots look fine. I wouldn't keep poking and prodding them or they will revolt and stop growing. They like to be stable and not bothered once potted, so pot it up and stake or secure it until it can anchor itself better in the pot with more roots. Then letting it be is sometimes better than fussing too much with them.

Oh you can't see the holes in the pics due to glare/ angle but the pot is filled with holes.
I will be repotting the orchid tomorrow with sphag/bark medium and just letting it be. I don't want to poke at it and stress it out any longer.
