This morning as I was watering my Phal, I noticed this new growth. It is under the fourth leaf counting from the top, but the topmost leaf is new. The roots are all much lower (this Phal has 10+ leaves). So, could this be a spike??
could be a spike, it has the more angular look rather than the rounded look of a root but it'll be a few more days at least before you can tell with 100% certainty.
The shape of the tip is the give away. The spikes look like tiny little mittens. a root is just round. Yours looks like a little mitten. Also Spikes grow up Roots grow away they feel like growing.
Thanks, all! Today I'm finally convinced it is a spike! This is the very first spike for me (I've had several reblooms from old spikes), but it feels really special. Anything I should be doing differently now that my orchid is in spike to ensure as many flowers as possible? Orchid food?
