So. Much. ALGAE!- Maxillaria Tenuifolia questions
I bought a division of a maxillaria tenuifolia about 3 weeks ago off of eBay. It is potted in sphagnum moss, which is cool because I have heard that max. tens. like that (please correct me if I'm wrong). However, there is a TON of algae growing in the moss. The media is totally green now. Should I repot it now or wait until spring? Will the algae hurt the plant? It hasn't really grown since I got it, but it has only been 3 weeks. Any thoughts?

I do not grow Maxillaria tenuifolia, but I do repot new plants because I like to check roots and look for critters ect. Things I read about the plant says it's adaptable to a broad range of growing conditions, so I think it would be fine to repot and probably a good idea. Maybe someone else has more info.

Does the moss look decomposed or is it just green? As the moss is in good condition, it doesn't matter if it is a little green. What is important is that it keeps its structure so that the roots are not smothered.
The max-ten can grow in practically anything, I think. I grow mine in red lava rock/basket pot and I let it sit in water. People grow this successfully mounted, in bark, in moss, in semi-hydroponics.....

Any time you have light, water, and fertilizer, you're going to have some algae.
Are you using a high-P fertilizer, or feeding a lot? That can really "explode" the algae bloom.
