Default Phal NOID - strange growth

Hi all!

Wanted to give this guy one last chance as it is growing two new leaves, but found that it had no live roots. What i did find was the below growth inbetween the dead roots...
What is this and what should I do with it?

I think that's the orchid's last attempt to live. It appears to be growing leaves/basal keiki to survive. Pot it up, wait and see what happens. If you're lucky, it will start to grow a root. Sometimes they make it; sometimes they don't.

Thanks! Sort of what I thought. Should I pot it up with the new growth up?

Yes. Be sure to cut away as many of the dead roots as you can. Put it in a pot so the root stubs are down, and the bit of new growth is up, where you expect leaves to be. I'd put it in a small pot with styrofoam peanuts in the bottom to take up space so that the new roots don't rot from too much moisture.
Best of luck!

For me, it would have to be pretty special to merit the care and long wait to see a flower. Personally, I'd bin it.

It was my very first orchid, so a bit sentimental.

This is the rest of the plant. It has lost it's two big leaves, so this is what is left.

Thus, remove all leaves and plant the new growth?

In your shoes, if I wanted to save it, I would leave it as is, and pot it up in bark. I cetainly wouldn't remove the leaves, as they are feeding it.
I'd put it in a place where it wasn't exposed to too much drying agents, and mist it every day so that some water runs down into the root area. It might survive, it might not.

At the moment I have it in a pot with no medium after I removed the roots and sterilized it. I was thinking of keeping it in a terracotta or clear air cone pot and just misting it daily. That growth seems terribly small to bury again....

True, I was thinking more that it would help keep the root area from drying out too fast.
You can achieve that like you are too. Plus you ca keep an eye on any root growth.
