If you have hard water, the pipes will be coated with calcite. Very soft water will not give the pipes that protective coat, and will pick up metal ions into solution.

The reason that your hot water tap tastes worse is that the heating process will have taken out some of the temporary hardness and the heating will also degas the water.

It's actually pretty common to eat orchid root in the form of powder in the Middle East! You put it in hot milk, like you would coco powder. It's called salep. It's not bad, actually.

yep, and plant too. I have read that certain dendrobiums are on the verge of extinction in the 'wild' in Asia because they are used for medicinal purposes.
