OMG! My mom just bought me a blue Vanda from the local grocery store for $20!
Ok I have to share my excitement! My mom was at the grocery store yesterday and saw that they were selling Vandas and they were selling them for $20 each! She wouldn't have known what they were if it wasn't for me showing her pictures of them a few weeks back. We were having a discussion about how crazy that orchids don't grow in dirt and she didn't believe me that they didn't so I had to show her pictures of Vandas growing in baskets!
Anyways, when she told me they were selling it at her grocery store and for $20 no less, I told her to pick one up for me. Once the blooms drop, she will ship it to me! I am super excited! Can't believe I got a vanda for $20. What a steal!

Wow, that's beautiful. I can't really grow them, so I have to enjoy them in other peoples' collections. Did your mother mention whether or not it's fragrant?

She didn't really say and due to my excitement I didn't ask her. I have never grown vandas either but always wanted to. I am not even sure if I can grow them here in SoCal. I know people closer to the ocean have grown them successfully but I live inland and it is extremely dry and hot where I live. Maybe those who have grown them successfully can give me some tips? I was always reluctant to try because of their high prices that I have seen online. I don't want to waste $50+ shipping if I can't grow them where I live. But for $20, I definitely can afford giving it a try.

Oh I wish vandas were offered in grocery stores here in Southern California!! My mom lives in the Midwest...I can't believe they can get vandas so readily but we can't.

They need a lot of water when air is dry, like twice per day. Also they like warm nights and lots of fertilizer. Check out the Vanda forum on this board.

I was thinking of growing it in a vase. My humidity is not the best and to receive the highest light I would have to leave it outside on my balcony which gets bright shade all day, so hopefully the vase will help retain some moisture and humidity for the roots. Also I can't mist the roots a few times a day. I can only tend to it mornings before work and evenings after work. I will see how much work this is going to be, hopefully it will be easy like my dendrobiums or cattleyas. But if not, I can toss it or give it away. Either way, it would be a good learning experiences.

I live in Mission Viejo. i've been able to successfully grow and bloom a couple different blue vandas. I collect rain water when available and use this to dunk the vandas every morning. The summer was more humid than usual and so they've thrived. I keep them under a umbrella or on my covered front porch in the summer. I give them full sun when it's possible to not burn them.

In the winter if it's cold I hang them from a tension rod in my west facing window. It's rarely cold here so I usually give them full sun then. I was bound and determined to grow one and had success with the blues. The others didn't survive.
