I have a phalaenopsis which I did not cut back the spike after it bloomed. It appears to have new spikes growing at the top end of the old spikes, just like a continuance of the old spike. Although very tiny, they definitely, at this point, have a mitten-like appearance. Is this possible? I tried to take a photo, but could not get a very clear picture of the tips.
And also yes it can start again from where it left off. I am starting to think it is better to cut them off and let a new one start over. they seem to be better and bigger blooms.
Some phal species, like heiroglyphica can rebloom from old spikes, the spike will just continue to grow from the tip. I have one of these and two old spikes started to grow again in May and it has a bunch of new flowers. So for this one, I will not cut an old spike till it turns brown and dies.
