I bought a large standing humidifier in December specifically for my orchids. And I'm glad I did, because at the time I only had 4, and now I'm up to 10, with new arrivals anticipated

BTW, a portable humidifier will also help keep from getting "zapped" when walking across carpets, will help computers last longer (less static shocks) and generally help with overall health of employees - not just the plants. Make a case to the boss for a humidifier.

I am the boss....

I worry about the humidity levels in the house just based on where we live. It's usually pretty humid here and with the house being an off-grade foundation...

I don't think this was meant for Florida! That's the "greenhouse" of orchid growing. I thought we were discussing most true "offices" in big buildings (or small) and dry atmospheres.

Due to my previous lack of experience, I nearly killed 4 phals just like you. The same exact story.
You did the right thing by removing that moss. But now pull that plant out of the pot (nice pot btw), and trim all of the dead roots off. Leave only the ones that are firm.
Than re pot. I used bettergro orchid plus (also from Lowe's) for a few months. I also bought a little humidifier from Walmart for $16 and have been using it every other day on low. Then recently I've notice quite a bit of new roots. One of the four just started to spike! The plant looks good, so there is definately hope. Remember bright spot, no direct sunlight. Oh, and only water once a week when it becomes dry.

Hmmm... it's tricky one... I'd be tempted to not water it for a few days and see what happens. I water my phals periodically about every week - 10 days and I've brought one back from no spike to have two spike and buds!
leave it to dry out a bit. Overwatering kills them quickly.
New spikes can take months to come so be patient, water it not to frequently and cross your fingers!

Here in lies the rub...your climate really makes a difference!

In the summer in Minnesota, don't need any moss and I can get away with watering once a week...in the winter, I have to have moss (blah!) and need to water often and mist a few times a day AND have the humidifier whenever my grow lights are on. Fun fun!

I found that having a little digital thermometer/humidity thing really helps me keep things consistent.
