Clonal Names
Hello,
I've got a couple Cats that came tagged with clonal names but without also listing the award that goes with the name. For instance C. Hawaiian Possesion ‘Valley Isle’, C. Kiritsubo ‘Shasta Rose’, C. Love Knot v. coerulea ‘Pyramid Lake’. Pictures in order below. I am under the impression that an orchid cannot have a clonal name unless it has also been awarded. Usually when an orchid comes with a clonal name but without a listed award I can find the award online with a bit of searching but I've struck out with these three. Am I wrong and are some orchids named but not awarded? Is there a way I can track down the awards for these plants?
Thanks!
Harris

Growers often assign clonal names to non-awarded plants. It is the only way to identify the best plants out of a group.
However, clonal names are not registered, unless the plant is granted an award by the AOS or another awarding organization. Some never get an award due to some minor flaw (in the judges eyes). Yet, they are still high quality or unusual plants, compared with the majority of plants from that grex ( or species).
It is considered bad manners to change a clonal name, even if unregistered.

Thank you for this very interesting information. Things vary so much from plant society to plant society.
