I would think that in the wild one of the few sources of nutrients would be bird and insect droppings, so while I wouldn't want my indoor orchids covered in poop, can it really hurt?

Well, I can think of no obvious hurt, except for if you add it positively you might upset the ratios. I get SERIOUS root growth with RO water and a precise, ultra low dose of K Lite.
I wouldn't want to mess with that.
