Default Cymbidium NOID - gift that was not cared for

Hi all,

I received this Cymbidium NOID yesterday from a friend that is moving abroad. It has just finished flowering(cut short by terrible care) and this is what I found when I removed it from it's pot:

- pseudobulbs below surface
- large bark chips in pot and then filled with soil to cover roots (pseudobulbs lived in this soil)
- discoloured pseudobulbs
- earthworms
- lots of new growth

I soaked it in Physan 20, removed rotten roots and sprayed with Physan again before repoting it. I must say, the roots look very good, with new growth on almost every single one.

The only thing I am worried about is the pseudobulbs recovering - the color is very strange - brown and pink and reddish.

Any advice?

I think it looks fine and should recover OK. The pinkish colouring I see is likely normal. If the pseudo bulbs that were below ground are not mushy and soft they should be good. I find some orchids, often some of the Oncidiums that have an upward growth habit, do fine when the older bulbs are lowered into the media to keep the newer growth at the top level.

Cyms are pretty hardy and like a good feed in the summer and then to be chilled in the fall to induce blooms. Not below freezing tho.

I have a cym whose new pbulbs are a dark purple. The rest of them vary between yellow and a kind of fleshy color, but they are all turgid. I think some cyms are just weird like that!

Thanks all!

I re-potted it and it looks much happier - I am worried it might be in too big a pot? It was an emergency op, so had to make due with what was at hand!

The roots are almost as wide as the plant itself, and not very deep.
