Got These From Giant... Rehab Questions
Default Got These From Giant... Rehab Questions

Hello again!
I have managed to keep the first orchid I purchases Giant alive for this long, and so I was itching to expand my collection/find something to do this summer. So I purchased more from Giant- not so healthy plants that I wished to rehab. Plus, the leaves on my first phal are discolored (hasn't produced any new ones, either), and the roots look a little funky (like it's growing new roots, but there's a noticeable difference between the old and new roots- they started out almost looking like bulbs at the end of the roots?) [Pictures 4 and 5]
Pictures are of the one who looks the worst... the leaves are leathery and the leaves are sort of weird in the middle, plus there's some discoloration that concerns me. I think it was super underwatered, and I watered it- the roots turned green again, instead of silvery. [First 3 Pictures]
I got one more from Giant too, who was very underwatered. I watered and it's leaves perked up a little, so I'm not super worried about him, but he's the guy in the last photo!

Help???

WAAAYYYYY too wet. Overwatered! Dead roots can't supply water to the leaves so they shrivel. Go to the menu at upper left, Forums, Beginners, Phalaenopsis Abuse Stops Here.

Here is the link for Phal abuse stops here:

The Phal abuse ends here.

Those won't need water for awhile. You may even want to repot the really wet ones to get them out of the soup. Maybe use chunky bark without moss.

Here is how I water:

Just water the plant at the root level. You can soak the entire pot, then let the water run out. Try not to get water into the stem or the base of the plant. If you do wipe out with a paper towel. Watch the roots, especially the ones inside the container. When they are silver/whitish they are dry, after watering they plump and turn green. Let them dry out to silver again before re-watering. If you are unsure, wait one more day. Sometimes I don't water for 2 weeks, depending on conditions. Also it is best to water in morning so it will dry some before night.

The medium was bone dry when I got them though- do you still think it's a case of overwatering? (I'm talking super dry, like hasn't really been watered in a few weeks dry)

Well the first 2 and the last one look pretty wet. Maybe you just watered them. Let them dry out now and see how the roots are before you water again. Go by the roots, not the wrinkled leaf. That leaf will take awhile to re-hydrate.

They should do ok then. Just let them dry out, don't water until the roots are white/silver again. Always go by the roots.
