HELP!! - Orchid Board

Hello Everyone!
I am writing from Toronto Canada, I think I might have done something very silly, my Wife and I got excited about our new Babys(keikes) so we cut them from the mother and planted with out any roots in a bark mix purchased at Home Depot, are we going to lose our new born Keikes?
Is there anything thing that can be done to save them? any help would be greatly appreciated!

What type of orchid is it?

If you could provide a photo .. that would help

Did the keikis have any roots?

Hello Dorothy, none of them have roots

I will try to figure out how to attach a pic and I dont know they name of the plant, but I will find out, its one of the very common ones that you find in hardware stores, if that helps

Sounds like a phalaenopsis? I bought a phal at a grocery store. I don't know anything about keikis myself so I cant wait to hear the answer to this question too.

That sounds about right (phalaenopsis) we have 4 of them (2 of which I rescued from a garbage bin at a banquet Hall, 1 of the leaf was damaged) My wife more than I have taken the up most delicate care and nursed them back to a healthy state. As our reward they blessed us with 3 keikis!

and now I am afraid that we might have damaged the keikis by re potting them before growing roots.

It's always best to pot a keiki after it has roots of it's own about 2-3 inches long. I'm thinking it must have had some sort of roots even if they were tiny. I don't know for sure, but if you add some KLN, which is a rooting stimulant, to the water, you may be able to coax some root growth.

My first thought was a phal as well and wondering if it wouldn't help to put the potted plant in a ziploc bag (sphag~n~bag).

I have 2 dendro's and 1 phal that I have successfully used this procedure. I used sphagnum moss in the pot instead of orchid bark from the depot. I as well used a room stimulator to promote "happy feet".

So are you suggesting to put the Pot and Plant into a ziploc bag for a few weeks and see it any roots develop?

I think for the technique Cheryl mentioned, it's best to take the plant out of the pot, so in the bag you just have: plant and sphrag moss to create a micro climate to stimulate growth. A light rooting hormone is a great idea too.

I wouldn't open the little bag too often, as this would disturb the climate. Think of it as a little orchid incubator.
