Advice needed for rescued Orchid
Default Advice needed for rescued Orchid

I found an orchid sitting in the garbage near my house. I believe it to be a Phal. I'm looking for advice on what I should do with it.

Does it need to be repotted? Should I cut the spike to try and get it to re-bloom or should I cut it low and let it get bigger. I've attached some pictures.

I'm in Vancouver,BC. From what I've read, an west facing window would be best for it but my west windows don't get a whole bunch of light. How much light do they need?

Thanks for any help.

as soon as the flower is gone, cut the spike to about one inch at the bottom....you may repot as soon as you can but soak the whole pot for five minutes to avoid more root damage/breakage....your rescued Phalaenopsis is happy and healthy just by looking at the leaves and the aerial roots.

That is a healthy phal and the pot is really nice too. It's such a nice orchid to find in the garbage and I am glad you saved it

I think that a less than very sunny west facing window would be good. I have Phals in windows that get little direct sun, and they bloom

That's what I was thinking also. Goodness what a good find, lucky you for it to be so healthy.

Thanks for the advice.

It is currently on the window sill which is facing the house next door. It is bright from the reflected light but no direct sun will land on the plant.

Thanks again

I am also located in vancouver, and I have my orchids in a west facing window that gets sunlight for only about an hour at the end of the day. (and indirect light the rest of the day)

I'm no expert, but mine seem to be fairly happy there.

Yeah, it is a nice garbage to pick up! hahaha

It looks nice with a new leaf and roots pushing out. and nothing broken or anything. and you know what the flower looks like already!

Phals need bright light but no direct sun, which most orchids do not need. Morning sun or very very late afternoon sun is alright, though.

The moss looks very wet. I guess you just gave it a good watering. Wait until the moss is almost bone dry (It will look much lighter in color and the whole pot would be very light when you lift it up).
Then the next time you water it, try not to water too much as moss stays wet for too long and many people here seem to have issues with phlas root in the wet moss.
I grow phals in moss for years just fine. The trick is the watering.
When moss goes bone dry, (even if the top is very dry, the inside might be still quite damp. but you have a clear plastic pot so you can easily examine the moisture level), it is hard to rewet.
Instead of pouring water on it until it gets wet again, get a spray bottle and mist those dry top portion.
The moss will easily and almost instantly get wet this way. Then pour a little bit of water at a time until you feel the pot is quite heavy but the moss does not get entirely sopping wet.
It might take some trial and error, or you might just get it right away. but keeping the moss slightly wet when you water is the key to long life of phals in the moss.

If all this sounds like too much hassle, then simply repot your phal into bark chips. The only thing to worry about then is to make sure you water often enough while the plant is growing as new bark tends to dry out quite fast.

Happy growing!
