After watching that i can see that i put the moss from top to bottom of log instead of a small patch. That may be why is dries out every day? Too much moss exposed in a thin layer? What do you think? I could remove some

You can always take some off. I put a small thin layer on the Kool log before O mounted. (I didn't make mine very big because the plant I have is small and not a creeper, I didn't go all the way up with my moss either.) Plus after it perks up, I can always remount.

On the instructions they say: "....place a thin bed of moss from the top to the bottom on one side of the log. This pad of moss should be fairly thin and only needs to go about 1/3 around the log..... press into the grooves of the log with your hand."

Thats what i did, up and down. I am thinking if i had done like you with only a pad under the roots, it would not evaporate so quickly because of the extra exposed moss. Mine are minis on the little logs.

I live in Texas and I covet Masdevallias-- a kool log might tempt me to try.

Is there anyway I can 'fake' a Kool-log to see if the concept works in my extremely hot and dry environment? We have had weeks over 100F, and I only cool my house to 77. It gets up to ~90F in my west windows.

I am thinking masdevallias are going to have to remain my orchid 'white whale'... :/

If you want to try it, just buy one. They aren't expensive and they work. I had a masdie that was doing ok until we started having a heatwave. Then everyday a leaf would turn yellow and it was starting to die. I got my Kool-log and the yellowing of leaves stopped. My plant is now turning around and getting better.
