I have about ten orchids on Kool-Logs so far:

Sophronitis cernua
Sophronitis brevipedunculata
Amesiella monticola
Cochleanthes amazonica
Maxillaria juergensii
Zygostates alleniana
Lepanthes imitator
Masdevallia floribunda
Restrepia dodsonii
Aerangis luteo-alba
Dendrochilum pumilum
Bulbophyllum hirundinis
Bulbophyllum roxburghii

Some were distressed when mounted on the kool-log and are now coming back. The Bulbo. roxrurghii is in bud - first Bulbo bloom for me.

Be sure to tell us how your Phrag fares!

I have dend unicum, dinema polybulbon, and scaphyglottiz. How often do you add water? I did them yesterday and they are dry tonight.

I add water when they need it. The need is greatly dependent on the temp and humidity levels

Oh let us know how they work out. They have so many orchids that have been mounted on the logs at the site. They seem to try a new orchid all the time.

I got a large one for a Masdevallia uniflora. I have owned it for about 9 months and doing great until this last bunch of hot weather. I am afraid I will have my first orchid loss, so I am getting a Kool-log to hopefully save it. I wasn't sure about size, I just saw the large, med, small and x-large. I didn't realize that if you clicked on the log it gave you the actual size of the log until after I ordered Bulbofett has her masdie on a large so I should be good. I hope it gets here as expected because so far it has been sitting in Indianapolis for 28 hours. I had ordered an orchid and it was in Indy at the same time. Luckily the orchid came today.

I would love to see some pics, especially with details of the roots on the logs!

I can't wait to see some pictures of your new log as well as the new orchid.

I know this might sound stupid but I cant be the only newbie to mounting to ask it. I am going to try a phrag on the kool log. Do i mount it with roots pointing down like when on a pot, roots up, or put roots on log with plant sticking straight out?

I think you can do whatever way you think is right for your orchid. I mounted mine 1/2 up with roots down and leaves up against the side. There are a few videos on Youtube about mounting on Kool log. Holy City Orchids has one.

On the sheet they give you they say "For creepers, mount low on the log. For others I like to have the base of the plant about half way up the log, leaving room at the bottom for about half or more of the existing root mass length. The new roots will not extend down as far since they will want to stay close to the Kool-log."
