Black Rot on Encyclia cordigera Male
Default Black Rot on Encyclia cordigera

I had a bout with black rot last year that wiped out most of my catts. Today I noticed a strange discoloration on my Encyclia cordigera and I feared the worst. I have segregated the encyclia from the rest of my orchids. I usually leave a fan running and am careful not to get the new growth wet. I have attached an image of the supposed rot. It's more brown than black, and doesn't feel soft to the touch. Should I be worried? Thanks!

Fungus problems on new growth is usually a symptom of calcium deficiency. If I were you, I would buy a calcium/magnesium supplement and mix it with your fertilizer every time you fertilize your plants. The product I use is MagiCal by Technaflora. I use one teaspoon per gallon, added to my fertilizer every week. Also, encyclias like to dry out quickly after being watered. Here in Florida we usually grow them mounted on tree fern. If you're trying to grow it in a pot, you want a very fast drying mix like Hydroton, lave rock or chunks of tree fern.
