Mystery plant & care help - possibly Miltoniopsis Pansy Orchid
Hi all,
I've been growing some Phals now for a few years and it's been going well. I've been wanting to branch out to another orchid to see how I could do.
So I was just looking at a plant shop to see what my local options would be. They had a bunch of (really overpriced) Phals.... but kicked up under these stairs I found these two struggling orchids. For a song, the lady let me take them home.
So, now not only do i have an orchid type that i'm unfamiliar with, but that need some resuscitation!
I believe them to be some type of Miltoniopsis Pansy Orchid... agree or disagree?
(Other than the Phals, there was one large Pansy Orchid in the store.)
From the researching I've tried to do, these orchids like to stay a little bit wet constantly? And they don't like quite as much light as Phals?
Let me know your thoughts in terms of how to best get them on track and any other thoughts on care!
For repotting - I currently only have a bark-y mixture. I don't have any moss. I can certainly get some though to add in if you recommend.

I don't think you have a malitonia the leaves look a bit thicker than the malitonia.
Orchid 1 and 2 looks like some type of oncidium hybrid.

I agree, those look like an Oncidium of some sort. Miltoniopsis are similar but usually have paler, thinner leaves. Oncidiums like to stay somewhat moist but still get some air to the roots. I can't tell how old the media is that they are in. The media in your hand appears to be partly degraded or at least have a bunch of soil like material with it. If you are re-potting, You can remove some of those old dead growths and any soft squishy roots. Onc. roots are much finer than Phal roots and can be brown and still be alive if they are firm and not hollow or squishy. I would probably want a finer mix or some moss added in but not all that fine soil mixed in. You could pick out some smaller pieces of bark and rinse them and get some sphagnum moss to mix in.

I agree that these are Oncidiums of some sort. What made you think they're Miltoniopsis? I also agree that I'm not so sure that's what they are, at least I really don't think that first one is for the same reason Silken provided. Did you ask the seller what they are??
I should probably just say I second/third the others from being able to get rid of the dried up pbulbs and get some new medium.
But before you decide, how are you with watering? Do you under or over? I under-water so I need my oncids to be in a finer mix as they are relatively thirsty plants; I do believe with most it's best not to let them dry out in between waterings, especially with the state these two are in. And they can usually take brighter light than Phals but without knowing just what you have be careful with the lighting. Reason I say this: My Onc. Heaven Scent can take bright direct light (once acclimated for the season) whereas my Wilsonara isn't as happy with it but they both like it bright and like to stay moist.

Thanks everyone for the input.
I really appreciate it.
The lady in the shop told me she thought they were Miltoniopsis, so that's what gave me that impression.
If they make it, i'll be interested to see what they are.
They have now been re-potted with dried pbulbs removed. I got a new mixture that is still course, but not overly large chips (but no soil-like bits), and lightly mixed in some sphagnum moss.
They are currently at a south-facing window.
What should I be on the look-out for with these plants to indicate too much or too little light?
I'm looking for them to keep a bright-green color?

Sounds good. Without knowing exactly what they are, its hard to know how light or dark green they should be. Some of my Onc. look about the colour of yours where others are a lot lighter. So long as your south window doesn't have a lot of direct hot sun it will likely be OK. Feel the leaves when sun is the brightest. If they are warm or hot, it is likely too much. Introduce them gradually to extra light. Most Onc. take less light than Catts but a little more than Phals and Paphs.

South facing windows will be good for them. The color will lighten up and that's fine. As long as the color is not too pale of a green it's fine. Suns burns happen fast as long as they don't have too much direct sun it will be fine.
as long as they are not getting sun burn they should be fine. It will take a year or more for that little one to bounce back the bigger one maybe a year. It's so exciting .

Could those perfectly round bulbs, smooth strappy leaves, be encyclia cordigera?
