Question Vanda Manuvadee FCC/RHT (Blue)

Hi Folks,

This is one of my new Vandas and sorry to say that it is in some bad shape. This is part of the Motley Crew of baggy orchids that I purchased at Home Depot (Note to self: NEVER EVER AGAIN).

Anyways, these roots or lack there of were in bad shape when I purchased this little one (did not know this when purchased)...the other Vanda has new growth and roots.

Is this salvageable or should I abandon this one all together...I know that orchids are some special plants and can endure a lot of trauma because of care and environment.

That is why I am asking for some advice on what to do about this one.

Thanks in advance.

Zach

Zach, I would suggest trying the "sphag n bag" method-- some damp moss inside a plastic bag. Put the plant inside and close with a twist tie. Keep it where it gets some light but never direct sun as that could cook it inside the bag. Every once in a while open the bag and blow some air into it. If it starts to show mould or stays too damp, leave the top of the bag partly open. This could take a bit of time but it shouldn't hurt and might help. Good luck!

Okay...that sounds like a plan. The only problem is that I do not have really any place that gets a decent amount of indirect sunlight...I have a north facing lanai that my phals just love...would the be an ideal spot for 'sphag and bag'?

Woah. I don't have much experience with rootless vandas, but I'll tell you that as long as they get the light they prefer, roots will shoot out and grow quickly Ensure it doesn't dry out too.

The key to reviving such a plant is high humidity (hence the sphag-n-bag suggestion). If your ambient humidity is sufficient this time of year (I know it is in the summer!), then put it with the phals and hope.

If it was mine, I'd set it in a clay pot with no medium and put it either in the bag or with the phals. Once it starts growing roots and can therefore absorb water and nutrition, I'd transition it into brighter and brighter conditions and put it in a basket of very coarse charcoal.

I'd agree with Ray ... clay pot or otherwise, without media, and keep humidity high. But first, trim away any dessicated, dried up roots.

I've got a similar looking one, it was a mericlone seedling which went downhill right after I bought it.
I've wrapped sphag around the base and put it in a shady spot. It's literally down to one leaf but the roots and grown which is a good sign.
And I leave it in the corner and keep up regular watering and fertalizing
