Is there a site to exchange orchids?
I have been a member of my orchid society for a year now, but as long as I have been there, there has not been mention of an exchange. They only seem to raffle plants. I have noticed that only the members who have been there forever trade with each other. Seems like a close circle of people.
Nothing wrong with raffles except you get what everyone else doesn't want. Plants that are usually sick, common, or just plain ugly. Occasionally you'll get that gem of a plant that someone just can't fit into their collection, but then you have everyone competing to get it.
For some of my divisions I'd rather trade them than put them in a raffle. Is there a website devoted to the exchange of seeds, divisions, etc...?

Not that I know of, but we do a lot of trading on here. Why don't you post what you have available and what you are looking for in a thread. Or just let people offer divisions that they have and see if you are interested in any of them.

Oh, I didn't know the trading here was so active. I will post here, and see what happens. I was just curious if there were specific websites devoted to the exchange of orchids. I know there are for peppers, and people get pretty into it. I acquired some Carolina Reapers and Bhut Jolokias this year as a result.

Have you considered asking the VP of your OS (who is usually in charge of speakers/events), to arrange an annual trade/sell/swap event?

I actually emailed the president. She said its something she would like to do and will bring up at the next board meeting. Only problem is my society meets bi monthly. Told her I'd like monthly meetings as well so we will see how that goes.

I'll just throw this out there...if your society is like mine...then I'm sure they would be thrilled for someone as enthusiastic as you are to step up and maybe volunteer to get on the board. We are always looking for new members who want to get more involved. And, quite frankly, the infusion of "new blood" is what most societies need. New ideas - fresh perspective = always a great thing!

I wish our society was more cooperative on such things. Ours is very stagnant. I tried to start a buy sell or trade table for our meetings ( with the permission of the pres.) I kept it up for 6 months, I was the only one who contributed! What to do? I also asked why we didn't have a table at our yearly show for members to sell some of their plants. Their answer was because some of the regular vendors would complain about us taking away from their sales. I wish there was more than one society here....Jean

There are also groups on Facebook. Try "Orchids Trade and Sale" for starters.
