I try many orchids and some stay but many go. There are some that I will never give away as they are 'must haves' and will remain a permanent part of the collection, even being replaced should they die.
I think every collection should have a Cattleya mossiae, a Neofinetia falcata and a (the already mentioned) Brassavola nodosa.
Some of the others I think that are must haves:
Potinara Burana Beauty 'Burana',
Cattleya Mini Purple 'Blue Hawaii',
Cattleya walkeriana,
Cattleya dolosa,
Cattleya aclandiae,
Soph cernua.
Leptotes bicolor
Ascocentrum pumilum (easy, small, blooms frequently)
Schoenorchis fragrans (or 'the creeping Schoenorchis,' Schoenorchis scolopendria)
Haraella rectrocalla
Mormolyca ringens (no idea why I must have it but I am never going to give this one away)
Angraecum of some type
Bulbophyllum of some type
Dendrobiums (normanbyense, aggragatum, phal-type that is usually in bloom)
Psychopsis of some sort

I hate mealies.
I had Sharry Baby but it took up so much space and needed divided so often. I gave all the divisions away many years ago.
