I just acquired this mini catasetum and I know most people go by the roots to determine when it is time to water but I can't really see the new roots on this one. the media is bone dry and the older growth is starting to shrivel or atleast that's how it looks to me.
I only have one catasetum and so far so good. Mine is about that size and right now I am only spritzing the top media. I am by no means an expert on catasetum, I can only tell you what is working for mine at the moment I have heard you gradually increase watering as the growth gets bigger. Hopefully others will chime in. What is the name of your catasetum?
It's big enough to be watering and fertilizing heavy right now. Actually, from the looks of it, it could used the extra water and fert a few weeks ago. No worries though...better a little late than too early.
I typically resume watering when the new growth is big enough that the leaves are just starting to unfurl. By that time the roots are usually a good 3-4" long too but even if the roots aren't, I'll start watering.

I bought mine from sunset valley orchids. it's catasetum tigrinum x catasetum cirrhaeoids and it is a mini catsetum.

Thanks! I spritz it this morning cause I can't stand how dry the media is but without fertilizer. going to up the watering now!
I agree. None of mine are nearly that well developed, and I could probably start watering a couple right now if I was impatient. I prefer to wait until I start putting them outside to water, so probably another week or two.
