Well, your climate is more or less the same as mine, altough in summer the temps could go 1 or 2 ºC higher. Here it's normal to have many consecutive days with 40ºC in summer. In winter, it's also normal to have many days with temps bellow zero during the night and morning.
The % humidity seems to be also very similar. As long as you provide a shade and water in the summer time, they'll grow by themselves without any special care from you.

Overall outdoor climate has nothing to do with sprouting BBs! I sprout mine in sealed plastic bags in the house under skylights in the attic where temps go from 70F to 90F in the summer. The sealed bags act as mini greenhouses. Since they go into a moist bark mix, they do to need to be watered.

In answer to what media, which is where this thread started, fir bark, NOT standard pine bark is the bark recommended for a potting mix as pine breaks down too fast. That said, there is a product on the marked called Orchiata which is in fact made using baked pinus radiata, a type of pine.

There are as many preferred mixes for Cyms out there as there are growers, and few of us use the same mix. I recommend you go to the Cymbidium section on this site as well as the search engine at the top of this page, and look at the many posts on mix for Cyms. It all depends on where you live and the conditions you grow under as to whether you need a coarse fast draining mix or one that holds water longer.

In regard to BBs, yours are potted in way too big a pot. I sprout all my BBs from one bulb, assuming it is the standard for the plant and not a small one. Two are fine. I believe Bil was referring to the division of an entire plant in keeping 5+ green bulbs to a division.

If you are looking for some guidance in repotting as well as culture, send a PM to goldcoastcymgrowers@gmail.com and ask for their free repotting guide and cultural instructions. Many of the members of the OB have done so and been glad they did.

Good luck

Update: one of my cymbs, potted 3 weeks ago using solely standard pine bark, is starting to show some leaves.

I've been lucky with cymbs.

On an earlier post I saw that cymbidiums could be planted in CHC, I don't know what that is, and it's not in the glossary. Also, is regular orchid bark pine bark? Or where do you get pine bark? I have several that were struggling from neglect, (bad mama,) and an ongoing battle with scale. I changed my spray to Bayer Advanced (what I could find in my area) and it has worked. I moved them from the greenhouse and now they are in ICU, I removed all the old potting mix and trimmed off all dead roots. I am glad to see that they might survive even if they don't have any roots. I have them in open plastic bags and plan to mist them every once in awhile. It is difficult to find good supplies in this area. I am limited to Black Gold Orchid Mix, or should I go online and buy something. Sorry about all the questions. Linda

I tell you what really grips my whatsits with cymbs (and oncidium hybrids).
I pot them up in the side of the pot so that the new shoot has the most space to grow into, and the unreasonable sons of broccoli go and grow a new shoot on the opposite side close to the edge of the pot.

INGRATES!

CHC probably is charcoal.Is it?

I use regular pine bark and they grow fine.

Cymbs (like many other orchids) like to be tight potted. So, probably that's why it happens.
