So the previous two shows I've been to this year (so far) left me feeling proud and discipline. And then I fell off and got a impulsive.

I visited the Chicago Botanical Gardens' orchid exhibit for its last weekend which was also the weekend of the Illinois Orchid Society's show, a sweet bonus. It was a great day for sure.

Here's what I wound up getting:
MY FIRST Vanda: V. Wirat x Kultana Blue

Dtps. I-Hsin Black Jack

Dtps. Yupin Fairlady

Beallara Tahoma Glacier 'Green'

Colmanara Masai Red

This plant has 8 pbulbs and 4 new growths, one pbulb has two of those new growths. This and the Beallara came from Natt's Orchids.

Oh and I almost forgot I got a very small division of Oncidium Copper Falls 'Michigan' for $3!

I'm nervous about my first Vanda! It had one bloom and 3 buds when I got it. The second bud opened and one of the other two has blasted. I'm not so surprised as this has happened with other plants when I first get them home. Any tips or advice you guys might have with Vandas is welcomed and I thank you in advance.

I'm a little curious about the name of Dtps. I-Hsin Black Jack because there was a plant in one of the displays that looks just like it but has a completely different name. I might reach out to Natt's and confirm what's written on the tag.

As I said elsewhere I got all in bloom plants - except the division of course - because I figure if I'm going to push it then I mind as well bring home some plants to stare at and enjoy! Now I just have to find a place to put them where they'll be happy...

Looks like some great finds. To avoid bringing home more orchids, I try to avoid going to the shows. I had to work at our own and thus, two more orchids. How can one resist?
Good luck with the Vanda. Looks beautiful!

Oh man, I know you're right, but how can one resist going to the shows!? Plus I love the photographic opportunity/practice so that just doubles up my reason to go...and guarantees I'll get at least one plant. Which two more did you get?

And btw, the Vanda is actually much more white when the flowers first open. They make me think of a purple dalmation but then they darken and become more and more purple. It's still beautiful to me though I was drawn to it b/c of the dalmation effect. And so far the third bud is opening, so only one bud blasted once it got 'home'.

Nice haul. That Vanda is beautiful. Well they all are. I'm not sure about that Black Jack either, I know at one time I saw that color on Hausermanns sight. I can't remember what the name was but I can't find it on there any more. They have another one they call Black Jack and it is defiantly a different color. They also call it a Phal. So maybe it does have a different name.

I do like it as I was thinking about ordering it myself love the white on the dark purple.

At least when you decided to get impulsive, you made some gorgeous acquisitions.

Those are some stunning finds. I think my favorite of the bunch is the Beallara Tahoma Glacier 'Green'.

Good luck with your new plants, especially with your new Vanda! I'm sure they'll all be quite happy in their new home.

..........you really have the orchid bug. Its not fatal but medication is ultra-expensive as its mandatory to get a new orchid a month ( luckily its on average )

I have Copper Falls, the plant gets REALLY big. I saw those for sale - looks like backbulbs that were sprouted. They grow fast.
There is a I-Hsin Black Jack phal - and yours is a close to darnit approximation. ( photos on OrchidWiz )
I was told that if you can grow Vandas in the Mid-West you have arrived , but on the other hand it was a Vanda grower that told me that !
I remember the Masai Red - it is really a rich, deep red.

I think a lot of us are going to live vicariously through your ( accumulated ) purchases. Time for a greenhouse !

BTW - our exhibit - Batavia Orchid Society got a first ribbon - we haven't had one for ages, so were happy.

Angraecum elephantinum and Blc. Your Mine 'NN'. The vendor brought the Angraecum for me and as I was paying for it, I saw the Cattleya.

I'll find the pic of the one I saw in the show that looks so much like it, but I've learned the Orchid world is pretty strange. Some double, triple registrations, naming confusion across the board, and everyone having their own set of tips and "proven" methods. For instance, last year I shared a pic of my Miltassia Shelob and someone told me that Miltassia is "out" and it's not Bratonia. I asked about this when a vendor at the Batavia show used the name Miltassia. She went straight to one of the judges came back and told me Bratonia is not correct, it is still Miltassia. Soooooooo now I have to change all my notes and those in my mind. Next year they'll probably change it to Bratonia, lol, whoever 'they' is.

Maybe you'll get one next time. Today I smooshed my face gently into the blooms of 'Black Jack' for the heck of it and I'll be dammed if the thing doesn't have a very light fragrance.

Thanks for the diagnosis, I've been worried. I think my latest acquisitions have worked as a vaccination against this overwhelming condition. I feel content (read: overwhelmed ). Probably helps/doesn't help that I've got some that are known to be difficult to grow and care for, so now the pressure's on!

Oh gosh, Copper Falls is not happy already! I accidentally broke a leaf on one of the growths but now that growth is yellowing. I fear mine isn't going to get "REALLY BIG". What makes yours happy?

Oh ho ho, this Vanda may make or break me in the orchid world it seems! (That and my Aganisia & Huntleyas apparently ). I think I'll go run it under the shower real quick...

Okay, I'm back. I agree it's time for a greenhouse, but unfortunately whatever we say and want doesn't always go. Congratulations on getting a blue ribbon! I did see that display it was quite nice. I think I have a quick pic of the display - I was in a hurry at that point - and some of the plants. Btw, I saw your cross at the Batavia show, it's a nice subtle beauty.

Ooo nice! See I think perhaps it's good advice to wear blinders when one is at an orchid show, that way you can't look around too much.

Oh no I didn't get the display. I was worried the vendors I bought from were going to think I forgot. But if I remember which pics are which it was the Vanda Doi Inthanond that got the blue?
