4 New Orchids! Den., Blc., and Onc.
Default 4 New Orchids! Den., Blc., and Onc.

Just wanted to share four new orchids I purchased this weekend at the Philadelphia Flower Show from Waldor Orchids---they're the nicest people ever!

1. Blc. Dan O'Neil 'Jubilee'-- I love the deep orange flower with the red margins. So beautiful!

2. Onc. Twinkle 'White Shower'--I've wanted a twinkle for some time now, this plant is so cute! I know some are fragrant, haven't detected any fragrance on this one.

3. Den. Fancy Angel 'lycée'--Such a sturdy little thing! I went with one that had nicer canes vs. some of the others that were available with more flowers. I can't wait to see the display this one puts on in future years!

4. Den. Delicatum -- A species plant I believe? The fragrance that comes off these little flowers is quite possibly the most intense fragrance I have EVER smelled in my life! This one inflorescence literally fragrances my entire apartment. I am shocked! Anyone have any culture tips on this one? I've googled it, and it appears that Den. Delicatum I find on google looks a little different?

The fragrance will probably come in 3-5 more days. Flowers don't tend to release their full scent (in my experience) until a few days after they've bloomed. Some, however, "build up" a fragrance by layering some ugly notes that come out first and building to a lovely one!

For example my dendrobium nobile (NOID) started out smelling of mothballs, and it is now layering some berry-like sweet fragrance over the ugly smell.

My Nelly Isler always starts out smelling like weird scalp oils (like when you go too long without washing your hair) and builds up to a gorgeous lemon candy fragrance.

All in all, great picks!! They're quite beautiful. I'm always cautious now with my buys because I am pretty sensitive and picky about fragrances, so if I got one as fragrant as your dendrobium delicatum, I might get headaches or annoyed! (which is worse? I don't know in the end, haha!)
